recommendations (some of which may already be known): Useful websites: Atomic Rockets (http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/) - Contains lots and lots of info about space, spaceflight, and other sci-fi-y stuff ranging from real tech to Phlebotinum aplenty. Includes both references and sections of texts from disparate fictional works. Web Worldbuilding: Eldraeverse (ha ha) Orions Arm (https://www.orionsarm.com) - hard/firm sci-fi worldbuilding project with quite a lot of detail and work put in. Focuses on the far future, in a world where superhuman intelligences have exponentially improved themselves and created a singularity... six times in a row. Contains painstakingly detailed societies, technologies firmly rooted in real science and physics (with shown work), moon brains aplenty, and more. Authors: Greg Egan (http://www.gregegan.net/) - An author with a focus on mathematics, quantum mechanics, and consciousness, Egans works cover everything from "What if you could control wave function collapse" to "What if there was a entire universe with two dimensions of time". Abandon all hope, ye who fear physics, because Egan has created at least two entire fictional models of physics from scratch and he hasn't stopped yet. Peter Watts (https://www.rifters.com) - Best known for "Blindsight" and the Rifters trilogy, Watts focuses on diamond-hard sci-fi involving biology, neuroscience, AI, and the nature of consciousness. Emphasis on "hard"; Blindsight and some of his other works feature a citation page as long as a entire chapter, listing where he got all of his information and his justifications for putting it in the story. If you want a interesting yet well-grounded picture of the future, touching on concepts and ramifications that you've never considered, look no further. Downside: most of his works are depressing as fuck. (edited)
19:13
Books: Accelerando (https://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/fiction/accelerando/accelerando.html, Charles Stross) - A intriguing book that details the progression of the modern world through a technological singularity. Web Fiction: Worm (https://www.parahumans.wordpress.com) - A interesting, and dark, world that builds on and deconstructs the superhero genre, and also dabbles a bit in sci-fi (and horror). Also quite long, with a word count rivalling that of entire book series. With This Ring (https://forum.questionablequesting.com/threads/with-this-ring-young-justice-si-thread-fourteen.8938/) - A fan fiction that drops a reasonable person into the insane and nonsensical world of DC Comics, with a powerful but insanity-inducing Orange Power Ring. A long work featuring a reasonable and rational adult trying to figure out why half of the world has gone insane, why everyone around him insists on wearing brightly colored spandex, and trying to instill some semblance of sanity in a insane world. Fall of Doc Future (https://docfuture.tumblr.com/post/62787551366/stories) - A superhero work starring a astonishingly powerful speedster named Flicker. A rationalist work, it focuses heavily on conflicts brought about by limited information, interpersonal conflict, transhumanistic self-improvement, and a battle between those who can see the future. Book: Nexus Nine by Mary E Lowd. https://furrybookreview.wixsite.com/blog/single-post/2019/09/09/Nexus-Nine-by-Mary-E-Lowd An uplifted cat tries to find her identity after merging with a precursor memory bank that's passed from host to host longer than she can remember. Bit of a "Trek-like" universe, fairly easy to digest, but explores a variation of brain uploading that isn't seen much.

Speaking of that sort of brain uploading, A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine is a heady political intrigue set in the heart of an empire enveloping human space. A tiny space station in the empire's path desperately sends out a new ambassador to stave off their annexation and discover what happened to the last one, aided only by an out-of-date memory backup of her predecessor.

Fantastic story about a small group of humans (more or less) taking their first steps into a strange and wild universe, as passengers on a twenty-five year journey aboard a living alien starship to found a new colony, as well as the aliens they're traveling with. Features some of the most believably bizarre aliens I've ever come across, never just humans in funny suits or mysterious plot devices but fully realized characters who happen to think very differently from us. It's the best bit of xenofiction I've read, and richly illustrated on top of that. Extremely recommended to anyone who wants their mind expanded. (speaking of DataPacRat's stuff specifically. Other authors can absolutely be less subtle)

…I'm not entirely sure how you can be subtle with those.

well in Weirdtopia, for example
20:08
the entire basis of the work is subverting the expectation of Utopia/Dystopia by making something which is neither
20:08
that is, instead of being Super Good or Super Bad, it's Weird
20:09
so having a requirement to wear a diaper actually kinda works in favor of that. And thankfully, the character in question is a robot, which ups the weirdness and neatly sidesteps any gross stuff
20:09
so it's the sort of thing you could gloss over if you weren't actually aware that diaper fetish is a thing
20:11
i don't know if i'd say the work is better for it, because Squick is a thing and that is absolutely a way you can trigger it in a reader, but it's at least passable.

I seem to recall the protagonist in that one got an exemption to the "recently embodied upload" signifier on account of having been alive before that law

yeah i don't remember it too well

There's no pics of his "rat skeleton robot" body wearing one https://www.deviantart.com/datapacrat/art/Sufficiently-Advanced-in-Weirdtopia-607765787
Avatar
oh huh, i thought he had run afowl of that law. Didn't realize it didn't come into play for him
20:16
but yeah, it's nothing new overall, it's just more niche so more people notice/get squicked by it
20:16
in general you can tell a lot about the preferences of a author by what they write
20:16
and other things

There was a chapter where he hid somewhere inside an ostritch-woman's body (I don't think they specified where)
Avatar
i think it comes down to "does it result in a good story", and "do i know how to detect a author's preferences from their writing, and does them having preferences I dislike bother me?"
20:20
if the first is "yes" and the second is "no", it's fine
Avatar
In the new one, "Hustling Through the Dark", the only fetishistic things I can discern is that the protagonist has a snake tail with a secondary brain, which is occasionally inhabited by a shadow of her ex-girlfriend. And mention of working as a surrogate mother during college.
Avatar
that's a matter of perspective, though
20:22
the work is already niche because it has things which some people view as fetishistic/things which indicate a fetish of the author, it's just that you seem to share it and/or don't consider it noteworthy
20:23
(in particular, furry-ness, which is well-accepted here but more up-in-the-air elsewhere)
20:25
[i mean, it's really easy to tell when a author has furry tendencies. Anthropomorphic main character? Involves transformation/alteration of the physical form? Cover art has a anthro on it? Some people would be offput by that alone. Perspective; no work is for everyone.]
20:27
that's why you ask "is the story good", and then "do i detect fetishes in it", and then "am i bothered by what i detect?", in that order
20:28
a good story is a good story, but people can be offput by things they see in it. But you would not believe how many things are a fetish, so most people aren't bothered by those things unless the writing tells them it's a fetish, inwhich case they are bothered if that is a thing that bothers them. (edited)
20:30
so it comes down to the quality of the writing and whether it induces a belief about the author in the reader, and that itself comes down to the susceptibility of the reader to that. By that logic, Weirdtopia and many other DataPacRat works probably wouldn't bother anyone unless their squick is furries (because that aspect is really obvious). The lesser aspects most likely aren't noticable to the average reader unless they're primed to notice it (edited)
